🌾 Lammas (aka Lughnasadh): First Harvest, Sacred Grain, and Mama Gratitude Vibes 🌾🍞✨
What is Lammas?
Lammas (pronounced LAH-mas) or Lughnasadh (LOO-na-sah) falls around August 1st and marks the first of the three harvest festivals. This sabbat celebrates grain, abundance, and the sacred balance between work and reward.
The name Lammas comes from “Loaf Mass”, when the first grain of the season was baked into bread and offered with reverence. In Celtic tradition, Lughnasadh honors Lugh, the Irish solar god of craftsmanship, skill, and light. It was a time of feasting, games, and gratitude, often held on high hills, in fields, or near sacred wells.
What It Represents 🍞🌻
- Gratitude for the first harvest
- Honoring hard work and perseverance
- Letting go of what’s no longer needed
- Grounding energy and preparing for seasonal shift
- Sacred motherhood: creation, nurture, and nourishment
Meaning 🍯💛
This is big mama energy time. You’ve been nurturing dreams, goals, your babies (literal or figurative) - and now you start to reap the rewards. Lammas reminds us to pause and say: Look how far I’ve come. 🌿
It’s also about preparing to release what's no longer aligned as we slowly inch toward autumn. Compost those old stories, honey. Make space for magic.
🌻 Lammas Rituals & Celebrations
🍞 Bake Blessed Bread – Use ancient grains like spelt, oat, or whole wheat. Bless your dough with intentions as you knead. You can even shape loaves into sun spirals or mama goddess figures!
🕯 Gratitude Fire Ceremony – Write down what you're thankful for and what you're ready to release. Burn the list safely in a fire-safe dish or backyard pit as an offering.
🌾 Decorate with Harvest Magic – Fill your space with sunflowers, corn husks, wheat bundles, and golden candles. Let the abundance be SEEN.
👩👧 Harvest & Craft with Littles – Go berry picking, make corn dollies, or create a “First Harvest” gratitude board together with family pictures, drawings, and favorite snacks.
